Back in the day, the word "diva" didn't apply to any well-known female as it does today, but only to the great ladies of opera and concert music. Adelina Patti was a diva in that original sense of the word, and she was one of the greatest of them all. She began her singing career as a child prodigy, and was before the public for over a half-century. In those years, she attained a star status only rivalled today by the likes of Elizabeth Taylor or Madonna, someone known far beyond the operatic world. Aside from her significance as a singer, she was also well-known for her controversial personal life and her great wealth and generosity. In her old age, Adelina Patti was also one of the first major opera stars to make recordings, and they're still available a century later. Patti's life is certainly worthy of a well-researched book.
While there have been other books about Patti, they were written many years ago and are long out of print. This book has the benefit of a few decades of distance, which helps with objectivity, and also of excellent research. "Queen of Song" provides a lot of insight into the career, personality, and times of one of the greatest of all opera singers. It's also a great read, and should be interesting even for those who are not opera fans, but who might enjoy the story of a complex woman who was also one of the major entertainment figures of the 19th century. This one is worth your time!
