But while Charlie is obsessive about his work, he's also intensely paranoid, given to deep depression, socially inept, and terrified of talking to women, qualities which are making it difficult to get on with his work or hold on to his tenuous relationship with girlfriend Amelia (Cara Seymour). Meanwhile, Charlie's identical twin brother, Donald Kaufman (also played by Cage), has shown up to move in with his brother. Emotionally, Donald is Charlie's polar opposite -- a loudmouthed, over-confident, superficial party animal who has an easy way with the ladies. The dry, subtle and quirky sense of humor along with the outstanding performances from a talented cast are the two strengths of this film.
For those who enjoyed 'Being John Malkovich', also by director Spike Jonze, Adaptation is a bit drier and slow running but still enjoyable. Kind of like 'Life Aquatic' post 'Royal Tennenbaums' for Wes Anderson.
If you're looking for a concrete sequence of events, a clear story line with the good and the bad guys and the usual plot, conflict and resolution this isn't the film for you and even the occasional flash of nudity wont compensate for the dialogue focused action-less pace.
