How fabulous appear his belongings, and what congratulations they give rise to on the part of his companions as he shows them his quadrant and his telescope, his uniform and his large stock of underclothing! (35 But there is one thing he does not show; there is one article in his chest that is not discernible when you lift its heavy lid, and look at its well-packed contents. In some corner, carefully packed between some garments that will soon be put on, or near some article that will soon be put into early use, is a Bible, placed there with prayers and tears, it may be, by a fond mother, who does not look so hopefully on the forthcoming event. Apart from the sorrow at parting, she knew something of the voyage of life; she had heard of sons who had gone forth under as favourable circumstances, and with as fair promises, who had yet made shipwreck of character, and had broken mothers' hearts. And, as she thought of what might be in store for her boy, she determined that, whilst a mother's prayers followed him, God's word should go with him, to be his chart and guide. And whether our course is a land or sea one, we equally need that chart. There are some who will read these lines, who will remember that their father or mother not only gave them this chart when they left home, but also entreated them to consult it prayerfully, night and day, and yet they have omitted to do so.
