Excerpt from Accounts of the Lord High Treasurer of Scotland, Vol. 8: A. D. 1541-1546 1542 - 3 and goes down to the beginning of the June following. There is then another blank for the space of two months, but the story is taken up by an account which begins in 3rd August 1543 and extends to lst October 1546, an unusually long period Of time for one account to cover. Kirkcaldy had fallen from power owing to the enmity of Cardinal Beaton, and John Hamilton, a natural son of James Hamilton, Earl of Arran, had been appointed in his place. He was at the time of his appointment only thirty-three years old, and though he is, in the preamble to the account, designated Bishop Of Dunkeld, he had not when he became Treasurer attained to that rank, but was Commendator and Abbot Of Paisley. His career is a matter of history, as he was one of the leading men of his time. Made Archbishop of St. Andrews, after Beaton's death, he incurred the enmity of the Protestant party, and having been taken prisoner by them at Dumbarton was hanged at Stirling, 7 th April 1571. With his first account, which is, as above mentioned, a very long one, the volume closes. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
