Excerpt from Accounts of the Lord High Treasurer of Scotland, Vol. 5 From their custody but before his character as an individual ruler has had time to develop itself. The period covered by the volume is from 1515, two years after the Battle of Flodden, to 1531, but no Accounts have come down to us for the periods between September 1518 and June 1522, from April 1524 to August 1525, and from August 1527 to August 1529. The omission of the last period is particularly unfortunate, as we have not even an incidental allusion to the escape of the King from Falkland and the dissolution of the great Douglas combination. In all there are eleven sets Of Accounts, some Of them being very short, only extending over a few months. They are, it must be confessed, not nearly such interest ing reading as those that have previously been published. They want that note Of personal interest which was so characteristic Of the others. There is no gay monarch meeting his young wife with a brilliant cavalcade, tilting at tournaments, building ships which were the wonder Of the age, casting guns, pottering with alchemy, and at last going forth to a death the tragedy Of which has rung in Scottish story for centuries. There are no doubt certain features in common in the Accounts of both the reigns. We have ample details and to spare Of the dresses provided for the King, Of the liveries Of the Royal Household, Of the pensions and allowances made to the Court.
