Vishnu Maya, called Aama (Mother) by everyone in her tiny Nepalese village, befriended the author when he was a Peace Corps worker in 1974. In 1988, on a trip prescribed by village priests as a way for the 84-year-old woman to earn merit by making a difficult trip late in life, Aama came to visit him. This chronicle of what became a 25-state, coast-to-coast adventure offers a profound exploration of beliefs, values, and a rediscovery of the spiritual that lies beneath the surface of America. 20 illustrations.

An unusual pilgrimage indeed-the author met and developed a unique friendship with an elderly Nepalese widow while he was teaching school in a village near the Himalayas in the 1970s. Original cloth backed boards with ivory linen, gilt titles, ivory boards, pristine condition. Tight, solid, square with sharp corners. Internals very clean, no underlining or highlighting, faint creasing to a few pages. B/w illustrations. 299 pages. 6.5 x 9.5 inches. Anchor Books/Doubleday, New York, 1995.

I picked up this book after seeing the author present a slide show synopsis of the adventures he shared as a young man with this lively octogenerian, Aama. Having heard so many of the details in his presentation, I wondered how much more i would get out of the book. I was treated to a well-crafted tale, expansive in the realms of spirituality, and cultural differences. To my pleasant surprise, the author provides an amazingly clear account of the revelations this experience in his life provided for his personal growth.
Seemingly holding nothing back, Coburn lays out the details of this unique pilgrimage of 3 people through the landscape, physical and cultural, of the U.S.A. in the 80s(?).
Although the writing sometimes lacks the finesse or insight of a post-colonial perspective, it doesn't pretend to offer such in the first place, and thus, can be enjoyed as an account of one man's learning from the relationships he has with this mother figure and a potential wife.
