It could result in millions of deaths not only directly from the disease but also from starvation caused by economic collapse. Forced migration and refugees could spread the disease even further, thus inducing a particularly vicious circle of debility and death. The West has hitherto understood little of the brink of the disaster on which Africa stands. Barnett and Blaikie, who have extensively studied the impact of the disease in the field in Uganda, have produced a sensitive and compelling analysis of the disease's human cost, and particularly how individuals, both those infected and their relatives, cope with the infection. Economic problems, particularly subsistence agriculture, and the human plight of widows and orphans are described and the dire consequences for already fragile economies are disucssed. However, the book is essentially about the harrowing human consequences of an incurable disease already endemic in a large proportion of the population. AIDS is an international problem and Africa's terrifying present cannot be ignored by those who have to confront the disease's future.
