The 37/52 Battalion came about by the linking of the 37th Battalion (East Gippsland Regiment) and the 52nd Battlaion (Gippland Regiment) in September 1942. They served in support of the 9th Division in New Guinea and was in action during the advance up the Huon Peninsula. In 1945 it operated in extreme isolation as an Independent Battalion Group on the north coast of New Guinea.
