8vo. 20cm, The First Edition, xxviii, 336p., with folding engraved frontis map, and 9 engraved plates (including 5 folding), in very good contemporary full calf, real raised bands, label stamping faded, otherwise internally a fine clean copy. (cgc) From old family library at Hilton Park-Clones contemporary ink notation on the top of the title-page. T.P.L. 207. Lane 1161. Sabin 22312. Hill p94. Ellis served as hydrographer, surveyor & mineralogist on the expedition under Capt. William Moor sent to discover the Northwest passage in 1746. The expedition proved decisively that no such passage from Hudson's Bay existed & contributed to a lapse of British interest in the subject until 1816. Ellis' work provided interesting & valuable information about the customs of the then relatively unknown Esquimaux, observations on the tides, and the `vagaries of the compass'. Plates depict natural history subjects, Eskimo costume & customs, and views. "Ellis went as proprietors' agent and scientific specialist with a two ship expedition commissioned to find the Northwest Passage, a hundred years after James' conclusion that such a search was pointless. Ellis' descriptions aroused James Isham to a hostile response, not published until much later (1949)". Waterston p9.

Ellis was sent on this voyage as an agent for Arthur Dobbs to find the northwest passage and to prove Captain Middleton, who had made an earlier voyage for the same purpose, wrong is his contention that no such passage existed from Hudson's Bay. Ellis was also unable to find a passage, but he and Dobbs continued to believe in its existence. Part of the famous Dobbs-Middleton controversy which continued in print for several years.
