Soule was a director of the Labour Bureau, Inc., which he helped to found. The LBI engages in economic research for labour organizations. With STAMP OF Wm. H. Sewell (1909-2001) on the endpaper. Sewell attended the University of Minnesota, where he received his Ph.D. in sociology in 1939 with a dissertation supervised by F. Stuart Chapin. Sewell was known for his research in the sociology of inequality, especially in schooling, as well as his empirical approach to sociology. He became chancellor of the Madison campus in 1967, and barely weathered the storms of protest, resigning a year later to return to teaching.
