The author, who has written other books on Burlesque (see end of this review), delivers what he promises: the history of burlesque from Aristophanes to Minksy. This volume is called "A Pictorical History", but you will find a well-written and at times witty text covering the entire subject, from it's noble theatrical roots to it's eventual cheesy decline. The photographs and illustrations are first-rate and reproduced beautifully, and all sources are given. Not only are the women performers themselves profiled (albeit in surface fashion), but the male contributors as well. The comics, specialty acts that appeared in 'olios', and the various legit and not-so-legit and shady promoters and producers who were important figures in this art form for the masses. Sobel traces the various incarnations of burlesque from minstrel shows to honky tonk to the 'naughty' forms of striptease which most people wrongly associate with this entertainment. And he shows how many of the latter day comics made the not-always-smooth transistion to radio, Broadway shows, Hollywood films, television, and nightclubs. Some of the famous names will surprise you, stars who one would never associate with burlesque! About 25 years earlier, Bernard Sobel wrote his first book on this subject, "Burleycue", which still stands as the definitive study of burlesque. Both books are recommended reading and must-haves for any fan or show business history buff.
