Seller's Description:
Various. Very Good Indeed. A smartly bound copy of this thorough and illustrated history of architecture throughout the world, written by the well known Scottish architecture historian, James Fergusson. James Fergusson is remembered for being an art historian, with a great passion for Indian historical architecture and antiques. His first book was published in 1845, an observation on Indian architecture called 'The Rock-Cut Temples of India'. This set the way for his future publications, looking at architecture throughout the ages, and how it has developed in different cultures from around the world. In 1871 he received a gold medal from the Royal Institute of British Architects for his work with the history of architecture. Other works of his include 'An Essay on a Proposed New System of Fortification: with Hints for its Application to our National Defences', considering how prepared Britain was for a French invasion, 'Rude Stone Monuments in all Countries', and 'The Temples of the Jews and the other Buildings in the Haram Area at Jerusalem'. Illustrated throughout with over 1, 400 in-text illustrations in the two volumes. Collates, complete. In a half crushed morocco binding with marbled paper boards. Externally, smart. Both volumes have light marking to the spine and to the leather to the boards. Very light rubbing to the spines, with Vol II having a small amount of rubbing to the front joint, and to the head of the leather on the front board. Vol I has a small patch of rubbing to the head of the leather to the rear board. Light marking to the paper boards of both volumes. Front hinge of Vol I is starting but remains firm. Rear hinge of Vol II is starting but remains firm. Internally, generally firmly bound. Pages are bright and generally clean, with just the odd spot and handling mark throughout. Very Good Indeed.
