Seller's Description:
[Thomas Bewick] Good. A charming and very rare children's edition of Thomas Bewick's influential work on British birds, illustrated here with eleven colour plates. A scarce children's edition of Thomas Bewick's popular natural history work 'The History of British Birds'. This history is a monumental work of natural history, and has been largely applauded for its woodcuts. Illustrated with eleven colour plates. Illustrated and written by Thomas Bewick. Bewick was the author of natural history works, including 'A General History of Quadrupeds', and an engraver. He was apprenticed and eventually became the partner to Ralph Beilby. Collated, bound without one plate. In a quarter calf binding with paper to the boards. Tail of the spine is lifting. Bumping and loss to the extremities and to the head of the spine. Some light marks to the boards. Rubbing to the spine. Small cracks to the head of the joints. Front hinge is a little strained but remains firm. Internally, generally firmly bound. Pages are very lightly age-toned with the odd spot. Closed tear to the plate facing page 95. Small loss to the margins of plates facing pages 100 and 117, with no loss of image. Good.
