First edition. Compiled by Katherine A. White. 294pp. Illustrated. Original dark green cloth lettered in red. A fine copy. "Ably edited letters of an observant miner and merchant" (Wheat). "These outstanding letters range in date from November 24, 1846, to January 22, 1881. Remarkably, all were addressed to Buck's sister...Buck, writing from New York, first mentioned the possibility of seeking gold in California in a December 2, 1848, letter" (Kurutz). In August of 1849, Buck arrived in San Francisco after having taken the Cape Horn route. He concentrated on being a trader, moved to Sacrmento City and began to prosper in transporting gold dust and selling property. By 1850, business had slowed and Buck took up mining. He then went on a trip to Tahiti and Hawaii and returned to mine near Downieville in 1851. He finally moved to Weaverville, opened a store, and remained until 1866.
