Seller's Description:
4to. Brown cloth with gilt spine lettering, dust jacket. x, 88pp, (164pp). 163 maps. Near fine/very good. Pastedowns age toned per usual; jacket faintly edgeworn and a tad rubbed. Handsome, tight first edition of this scarce etymological study, a seminal work in the field. Laid in is an interesting mimeographed 8pp (rectos only) 8½" X 11" "Outline of the Principal Speech Areas of the Eastern United States"--not seemingly issued in conjunction with this book, but referencing it. Front pastedown bears 1950 ownership signature of Frank S. Hanlin (1924-82, bibliographer and University of Iowa special collections director).
