A story of English fashionable life, with a heroine who at forty is still as beautiful as a dream, and wins the hearts of all men who approach her. Her story, chiefly consists of her love for two men * * * * * From "The Church of England Pulpit, and Ecclesiastical Review," Volume 38: THIS is a very instructive as well as entertaining novel. The description of scenery and persons are compact, individualized, and life-like. There is no "padding" or wearisome repetitions in them. They are as clear cut and distinct as if they were presented to the mind of the reader as photographs. The chief scene is laid near the banks of the Basingstoke Canal, on the borders of Hampshire and Surrey. Probably some of its readers may be able to recognize the villages and landscapes so vividly described. The instruction to be obtained from it is twofold. 1st. The art of entertaining, which is so little understood and practiced in this country. Lady Mary Milton fully explains the secrets of her success in this line-a success which is not obtained by 95 per cent. of the entertainers of the present day. 2nd. The stimuli and limitations of a man's and a woman's love. The woman of forty has a large experience of these conditions, which we think are eminently true to Nature, and may be profitably studied by both sexes. The love of woman is unlimited, but that of man our author describes as follows: - The passionate longing would at times suddenly cool down. Any long strain of emotional thought is apt to extinguish its own fire, and requires a new energy to rekindle it, obeying some hidden law, some unknown boundaries which have been set to human sensations in order to protect them from themselves. At such moments Brice felt distinctly that he did not wish to see Magdalen Cuthbert again, that she had cast over him a spell against which his higher nature rebelled, a nature which in him would surely reassert itself. If she prevailed, blight would inevitably follow-the blight of all strong purpose, the blight of all high ideals, whether of religious, physical, or intellectual work, without which a man cannot live, though a woman may be able to exist. Man cannot sustain his mental energy by love alone; the very durability of his vice demands more from him. and by a saddened satiety provides an antidote against a moral decadence.
