Some few attempts had alfo been made by this country towards the conclufion of each of thofe centuries; but it was not until the year 1764 that great-britain, benefiting by the ex perience of former enterprizes, laid the foundation for that valt accef lion of geographical knowledge, which fhe has fince obtained by the perfevering fpirit of her fuccellive diftinguilhed circumnavigators.
