The technological advances and globalization of the Information Age have changed our lives so greatly and so rapidly that we tend to assume that transformations of this magnitude are unique to our times. But the early twentieth century was also a time of technological revolution, when Americans of the Progressive Era watched as giant corporations used new inventions to produce ever more wealth, create millions of jobs, and offer people a stunning array of new consumer goods.Drawing on the rich scholarship of recent social history, Steven J. Diner focuses on how these changes affected Americans of diverse backgrounds. He shows how new machines -- telephones and phonographs, vacuum cleaners and sewing machines, stoves and motors (to name just a few) -- completely altered the way people lived. More important, he perceives how people at all economic levels -- industrial workers and farmers, recent immigrants and African Americans, white-collar workers and small entrepreneurs -- had to reinvent the ways they managed their work, family, community, and leisure as familiar modes of economic life were swept away, hierarchies of social status were rearranged, and citizens' relationship to their government was redefined. This is a striking new interpretation of a crucial epoch in our national history.
