Roman Vishniac's A Vanished World is an extraordinary record of the lives of German and Eastern European Jews in the years immediately preceding the Holocaust. Vishniac, a Russian Jew, began to take photographs of village life during World War I, when Russian Jews who lived near the front were accused of being German spies and were deported to Siberia. He later moved to Germany, where he witnessed the horrible events of Kristallnacht and the anti-Jewish legislation that allowed Hitler to declare his enemies stateless and therefore unworthy of international protection. As we study Vishniac's photographs--a surviving fraction of the more than 16, 000 he took--we are aware that we are seeing the faces of those soon to die, witnessing a world that has all but perished. Yet that world, of shops and schools, of busy streets and quiet farms, remains with us if only as a ghostly memory, thanks in part to Vishniac's compassionate eye.; 0.5 x 11.75 x 11.5 Inches; 179 pages.
highly emotional and soulful. I love those chidren and those elders and men that have lived so poorly and with such dignity. Wonderful photographs

A Priceless record
This is one of the most moving books of any kind that I've ever seen, a priceless visual record of a world that no longer exists, thanks to the Nazis and their brutally efficient Holocaust. It's a world of extreme poverty--but lit from within by the extraordinary faith and devotion of the Jews who inhabited the shtetls of Eastern Europe in the years just before World War II. The photographer Roman Vishniac wandered through these hamlets taking many thousands of photographs (mostly against the inhabitants' wills), only two thousand of which was he able to smuggle out of Europe. Even without our knowledge of what fate awaited these holy innocents, there is a profound melancholy, an aching sorrow in their faces, which must haunt anyone fortunate enough to leaf through these pages. This is a precious--a holy book.
