Dr. MacLean emphasizes that the primate forebrain has evolved and expanded along lines of three basic patterns characterized as reptilian, paleo-mammalian, and neo-mammalian. Radically different in structure and chemistry, the three evolutionary formations comprise, so to speak, a triune brain.
