Seller's Description:
Good. No Jacket. 564 pages (compelte). A placid copy. The front pastedown has a genteel ex-libris plate showing previous ownership by the academic S E B Bouverie-Pusey (his family once held the manor of Pusey in Berkshire). The frontispage has another attractive ex-libris plate (wood-block engraving) showing previous ownership by Guy Carleton Jones, after whom the South African mining town, Carletonville was named (Carleton Jones was instrumental in discovering the lost large reef that stretched from Randfontein all the way to Potchefstroom). The boards are resolutely sure. They have wear and scuffing about all edges, corners and seams. The spine has been repaired with a leather patch. The binding has also been repaired. The pagetrims are rough trimmed. They have handling wear and storage dusting. The contents are most pleasing-especially taking the book's age into account. At the time of the book's publication Armistead, a Quaker and fervent anti-slavery campaigner in Leeds, was prominent and already well engaged in his campaigning. Hence the historical importance and certainty of this book. The pages are relaxed, certain. They have a few age-related, handling marks. They are otherwise clean, clear, produced with conviction and diligence, proud, assured, pleasing throughout. fk.
