I have thought that this inconvenience, which unless diligently watched over, might have grave consequences, could easily be avoided, if, instead of dead food, we could supply the young salmon and trout with living food; although the results which I have obtained, in acting thus, be not as yet firmly established by any long practise, they appear, however, conclusive enough to deserve to be reported. The fry of frogs, so greatly extolled by the two fishermen of Bresse, has been tried first. The ova of this oviparous four-footed animal, having been placed in fish ponds, in the apparatus for the development, with the ova of salmon and trout, were alike developed, but neither tadpoles nor the albumen which envelopes them, have been sought after by the young salmon or trout. Shall we say that this kind of food is not to their taste? By no means; they were only too large for so small animals. E If tadpoles axe suitable for subjects eight or ten months old, or one or two years, I am sure they cannot be food suitable for young fishes, which have just lost their umbilical vesicle. Consequently, I have been forced to renounce for the present time, this kind of alimentation. I have, therefore, betaken myself to another expedient, the result of which has proved most felicitous.
