Excerpt from A Treatise on the Progressive Improvement and Present State of the Manufactures in Metal, Vol. 1: Iron and Steel In the rivers of the East, along the banks of which human industry must have been first exerted, gold was discovered in deposits similar to those which are now attracting so much attention in Califiornia and Australia. The rude Indian bellows, which in? Now employed by the native Hindostanee, formed from the stumps of trees, and used as a kind of pump, a piston being fitted to the hollow, is in all probability a representation of the most primitive form employed fir producing the heat necessary to fine the refractory ores ofiron.
