The Weakness aiid Slowness of the Pulse happen he exactly in the same manner as Lhave just now explain'd them....j, f The Closing os the Ejie-luls.is Occasion d by a Deficiency of Spirits which leaving all parts destitute of their requisite quantity, it follows that of those few Spirits which flow.from the Brain into the muscles of the Eye-lids, the Orbicular which is far the larger will receive a greater quantity than its Antagonist the Mufeulus Re&us or Jperiens of the.Eye-lid and by consequence contract it self with a more prevalent force, so that the Jperiens cannot operi open the Eye again, Tp make you conceive this more plainly, I will explain in two words the Mecha-The Menism of the alternative' motion ofchamsmof the Eye-lids. The Under-lid hasj little or no perceptible motion, but thn of the the Tipper moves up and down with-Byr out any voluntary act of our Will: the Muscle which shuts the Eye is Orbicular, and goes round all that appears of the Eye when it is open: The Aperiens, which serves to open the Eye-lid, is a strait muscle, which takes its origin from the bottom of the Orbita, and inserts it self in a streight line into the middle of the foremost part of the upper Eye-lid. Now the Orbicular Muscle cannot contract it self, without stretching aud extending the Aperiens to a greater length...
