Someone loaned me this book, and after reading only the first few stories, I ordered my own copy. This compilation of essays, articles and yarns presents a history of the Sierra Nevada territory, chronicling who discovered passes across the mountains, and their experiences in doing so. I have not yet read all of it, but the stories from Kit Carson, Fremont and others that I have read thus far are all intriguing and interesting. It's easy to place yourself in the times and imagine what it was like for these couragous and tough men. If you like California history, or mountains, or just good stories, I recommend this book. (I'm not giving it a 5 only because I haven't finished it yet, and don't think that would be right.)
