Where several acres must be drained the above method would hardly be practicable even if the underdrainage conditions were favorable. It is possible, however, to arrange in such a manner that a good windmill will drain a considerable body of land, where only the underflow must be dealt with and the lift is less than 20 feet. One method of draining by wind power is illustrated in Fig. 129 where A is one of a number of closed drains leading to a collecting basin, D, which is connected wilh the well from which the water is discharged through thr pump into the drain C. If the area is small or the capacity of the pump large the water may discharge directly into the well, which may be provided with a float to throw the Fio. 129.--Method of draining sinks by wind power. In still other cases it may be practicable to lay the sink off into lands separated by broad, open and rather deep ditches, into which the water from the lands could drain and where evaporation would be much more rapid than from the soil.
