The documents upon which the history is based are written in the rocks of the earth itself and the forms Of its surface features; they present a series Of incontrovertible records, and, if we would read this history, it is our part to learn to decipher the records correctly. Much of this has been done, but much also remains to be done; it is the aim of this work to present a general account of what has been accomplished. Many writers define Geology as a history Of the earth and its inhabitants, as Shown by the record in the rocks.
