So Moses the servant of the LORD died there in the land of Moab, according to the word of the LORD. And he (the LORD) buried him (Moses) in a valley in the land of Moab, over against Bethpeor: but no man knoweth of his sepulcher unto this day. And Moses was an hundred and twenty (120) years old when he died: his eye was not dim, nor his natural force abated. (Deuteronomy 34:5 through 34:7) At this time of the leadership of Joshua, who has been the personal assistant to Moses the children of Israel have matured in their dedication to obey the LORD God! It took Moses under direction of the LORD God, forty plus (40 plus) years to bring them to this level of trusting God the Creator! But along the way there have been few comments in scripture about Joshua until the time God inform Moses he must make preparation to die. Thus, we only learn that Joshua would become the leader of Israel after Moses in Numbers 27:12 through 27:23, which is about the time approaching forty years (40) since the children of Israel rebelled against God; refusing to enter the land of promise! At this time as Joshua leads the children of Israel into the land occupied by heathen nations they have heard of the exploits of Moses and the children of Israel; and are very much on edge to say the least. The children of Israel have lived a nomadic existence, while the LORD God, by the hand of Moses, prepared them in the desert wilderness to enter and take the land promised of God to their father: Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Purpose, prophecy, and records of their travels are documented in the volumes of the Pentateuch (Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy written of Moses); and this Book of Joshua, describes the crowning efforts of their forty plus (40 plus) years to enter the land. Prophecies of the Lord Jesus Christ is ever present and demonstrated in the many ordinances, judgments, and statutes the LORD God commanded Israel to obey at the direction of Moses! Now, at this time the children of Israel complete the effort of entering the land under the leadership of Joshua!
