Drawing on O'Brien's experience of cancer and of childhood abuse, and on his ongoing collaboration with a war reporter, the four essays in A Story that Happens --first written as craft lectures for the Sewanee Writers' Conference and the US Air Force Academy--offer hard-won insights into what stories are for and the reasons why, "afraid and hopeful," we begin to tell them.

"...knowing that of course the story never ends, for when it does we are really turning the page on another beginning"
My firstthought was "not another woe is me" memoir. And then, I read the subtitle:"On Playwriting, Childhood and other Traumas". I was sorry that was my first impression, because this is the second book I've read lately that knocked me off my feet. I am a cancer thriver (more than surviver after 30+ years) and many childhood and early adult traumas. These four essays, spanning four years are about an era in recent history that in some ways have shocked us all to the core. How does humankind remember (or forget) the 0utrageous issues of those four years? Can we mature beyond it?
Woven into this small book is a Masterclass on creative writing helping you deal with outrageous practices. How do we deal with our past, our present and our future as with our maturity comes knowledge we might not have in our youth. I have seen comparisons to other writing books by Annoe Dillard and Anne Lamott and I concur. However, this book goes way beyound that. Highly Recommended 5/5
