We say now, as we have said before, .... that the only policy which is honorable, statesmanlike and just, in dealing wi-h publio affairs in the South, is to apply to a colored citizen, when a candidate for office, precisely the same test, end none other, that is applied to a white candidate for a like office. No man shonld be accepted because he in white, nor rejected because he is black." (a) This was the simple truth which South Carolina had needed for more than six years. It wonld seem that the man of prejudice had gone, as well as the "Cavalier "; and when one sees the man of reason supreme throughout a campaign, he can best believe that the Christian has come to stay. The Courier of October 80,1874, said that there were only two ways of dealing with the colored people in the States in which they had a voting majority; that one way was to thrust them under foot, and the other way, was to work with them in every public matter in which they and the whites had the same interest and purpose; that the South Carolina conservatives had chosen the latter course, and in so doing they had set an example which other States must follow, and had fonnd the one single, natural, reasonable and honest way of solving the most perplexing political problem of the age. Under the refreshing influence of such manly and eminently wise appeals as these, the whites made a vigorous effort. Although the charges against Cham berlain were doubtf a!, at least, and the man himself in all respects different from the infamous Hoses, yet the reformers were defeated by less than ten thousand votes ont of about one hundred and fifty thousand--the largest vote oast since 1838.
