A SHORT VIEW OF THE ENGLISH STAGE 1900- 1926. Note: The object of the writer is less to present facts than to trace causes and deduce something of effects. That which is deduced is that though some things may be rotten Elsinore all is well with Denmark. And perhaps Elsinore is not in quite as poor a way as a casual inspection of Rosencrantz Avenue and Yorick Circus might suggest. Nothing will be said about the decline of the great actor and the rise in general level of accomplishment among players, neither are the questions of scenery and production touched upon, the excuse being the old one of the quart and the pint-pot. For other omissions due to ignorance or forgetfulness the writer craves pardon.... Many of the earliest books, particularly those dating back to 1900s and before, are now extremely scarce and increasingly expensive. We are now republishing these classic works in affordable, high quality, modern editions, using the original text and artwork.
