Gerald Mast's A SHORT HISTORY OF THE MOVIES in an informative history of film -- and at over 600 pages, not all that short -- which adequately covers the history of cinema with an emphasis on American movies and movie-making.
I do, however, feel that there are a couple of books out there that should be considered first: one is the very reader-friendly UNDERSTANDING MOVIES by Louis Giannetti, a favorite of college intro-to-cinema courses, and which like Mast's book has been thru multiple editions. The other is also a popular textbook but of greater length and erudition: Bordwell and Thompson's FILM HISTORY, very detailed and of comparable length to the Mast book.
