Soon after his arrival in the of Bay of Islands he called the chiefs together at Waitangi, Waitangi where Busby lived, and after Feb. 6, 1840 41 fr-full explanation and two days' discussion concluded with them the famous and important Treaty of WaiS TM/-tangi. This contained three OJ clauses, each of which was (2, aI/v interpreted to the chiefs by 3Z their friends the mission 0d-, -n? aries, and well debated among CvJJ y C7p them both in council and-in their villages during the evening. The first clause Ja) "455--yielded to the Queen of Eng2 03"-land "all the rights and w S8l powers of sovereignty" which the chiefs had in their districts. Siunatureb To The Teeaty Of The second clause guaranteed wa, tan01-to the tribes "full and undis turbed possession of their lands," and ordained that, if at any time the tribes wished to sell land, they should offer it first to the British Government. The third clause gave the natives of New Zealand all the rights and privileges of British subjects. Here was an open and honourable transaction; there were no beads and Jews' harps about it; the wording of the treaty was clear and simple--the chiefs understood it, and Hobson understood it.
