Barbara G. Walker's "A Second Treasury of Knitting Patterns" is about double the size of her first "A Treasury of Knitting Patterns"; Ms. Walker states in the preface " I am grateful to the hundreds of kind readers who have mailed me patterns...." ; it was the readers and buyers of t "A Treasury of Knitting Patterns" who using traditional mail, provided an unsurpassed collection of knit stitch patterns to Barbara G. Walker. Knitting Sttitch instructions are the "patterns"; there are no instructions for making a finished garment or other knitted item. The author provides information about each stitch, its range of use, and perfect instructions; there is an accurate black and white photograph of each stitch pattern. Each pattern is carefully categorized into the most appropriate category ;there are cable and aran stitch patterns, slip stitch patterns, ribbing patterns, lace patterns, and more. Scattered throughout the book are some ancient knitting patterns including Eygyptian knitting; to date she remains one of the very few scources for pattern stitches used in actual Ancient Egyptian knitted garments exhumed by Archeologists! All stitch patterns are for hand knitting. The Author encourages the reader to "try knitting a swatch" and decide how to use a pattern stitch in a project. Knitting Designers use "A Second Treasury of Knitting Patterns" and its earlier companion "A Treasury of Knitting Patterns" in designing current garments; Much of Ms. Walker's work has been plagarized in the bast decade in newer and far less informative pattern stitch books. I also knit; When I first began using " A Second Treasury of Knitting Patterns" I followed Barbara G. Walker's suggestions; I knitted a sample, I checked the guage, I referred to a garment pattern , and made necessary adjustments; As an example: using a Twist Stitch openwork pattern, causes the knitted fabric to open up and increased the guage; so I chose the garment instructions for a smaller size resulting in a finished garment of the correct size . You can discover the Designer you are. This book is highly recommended. I own one and use it frequently.
