Seller's Description:
None. Good Only. An extremely scarce treatise on Religion written by the Jesuit Francis Walsingham. It outlines his spiritual pilgrimage, and is said to have 'immortalized his name'. The second edition of this extremely scarce publication. The first printing of this title was in 1609. This work was printed during the reign of James I. James I was a Protestant monarch who sanctioned harsh measures to control English Catholics following the gunpowder plot. The author of this work, Walsingham, was one of the forty-seven priests banished from England after the Gunpowder Plot. Walsingham entered the English College, Rome, on October 27th 1606 and was ordained a priest on 12 April 1608 and was then sent back to England. However, he entered the Society of Jesus a year later. His pilgrimage was recounted in this work, which was produced with the assistance of Robert Persons, the rector of the English College. He re-entered England on a mission for the Jesuits under the alias of John Fennell and worked in the Leicestershire and Derby districts. ESTC: S119384.
