Fairy Tale Retold from Black Perspective
As a small child, I devoured Fred Crump Jr.s books and the majestic illustrations that surpassed human imagination. This portrayal of "Beauty and the Beast" using African characters puts an intimate touch that only a Black author writing for his people can achieve. The story is simplistic, yet compelling and the reader is drawn in by the fascinatings artwork which has mystical imagery. I am currently 1 years old and already I have decided to read Crump's books to my future children. It saddens me that Fred Crump Jr.'s books are not heralded as one of the best in children's literature. It should be in the home of every child, specifically those of African descent. Reading "A Rose for Zemira" will spark a hunger for more books of the Fred Crump Jr. collection.
