Where this contention will end it is impofllble to forefee; but, if it continues much longer, in all probability the animofity between the two nations will be as great as ever it was between the Englifh and French. We will now turn to the affairs of Germany, where the miniftry continued the war, but without giving it any degree of encouragement. If we were gone too far to recede, as was the opinion of fome, it was furely but good policy to have afllfted thofe who were there; and not have left th m reduced to the alternative of defending themfelves (againft the French army, confiderably reinforced by frelh troops) whether able or not, or be facrificed. In the month of March the campaign was opened by a fkirmifh between the French garrifon ot Gottingen, and a detachment of the allies, in which the latter were defeated; but they foon after made amends for this flight difafter, by repulfingthe enemy in his turn. On the ipth of April the hereditary prince took the ftrong caftlc of Arenfoerg, which had been of confiderable fervice to the French, by preferving a communication between their army on the Rhine and their garrifons at Cafifel and Gottingen.
