Transverse girders, 8 feet long by 2 feet 5 inches deep, and of an inch thick, connect the longitudinal girders--as shewn in plate 32, fig. 15. The web is formed of two plates, butt jointed at the centre, having a covering plate on each side and rivetted with inch rivets. The angle iron in top and bottom flanges is 2 inches by 2 J inches, by 5-16ths of an inch, and at the ends 3 inches by 3 inches, by of an inch, where it is secured to the main girder. For convenience in shipping, the girders were made in lengths, as shewn by shading in plate 32. To complete the description of this viaduct, we will enter into a few further details with a view of determining the nature and intensity of the strains to which the different parts of the structure may be subjected. It is apparent that this will be obtained in the most satisfactory manner, when the strain on every sectional inch of metal, either in the top or bottom flange, will bear the same proportion to the limit of elasticity of wrought iron.
