The conclusion of the Lord's prayer, (which is, For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen, ) teacheth us, to take our encouragement in prayer from God only, and in our prayers to praise him, ascribing kingdom, power, and glory to him. And, in testimony of our desire, and assurance to be heard, we say, Amen. To some, this conclusion of the Lord's Prayer may seem not to accord with the tenderness and sweetness of its' preface; but if we examine it with proper attention, we will find that it admirably displays the wisdom of our Lord. The softness of the character under which the Deity was represented, and the various petitions which he had encouraged us to present to him, might, he was aware, through the folly and presumption of our hearts, lead to a familiarity in prayer unsuitable and dangerous. He wished, therefore, to give us such views of his Father's glory as would shed the awe of his majesty over our spirits, and excite our hearts to fear his name. But this is not the only view we are to take of it. There is encouragement to prayer in all its majesty. It shews us that no petition can exceed his power to bestow, and that great as the favours are which we solicit, in granting them he acts in a way worthy of himself. With stores so ample, and with love so kind, we may well open our mouths wide, in the faith that he will fill them abundantly. In this conclusion, the Redeemer raises us from the wants of earth to the work of heaven; that work For which every ordinance is intended to prepare us, that work in which man's chief end is gained, and his complete felicity is to be enjoyed.
