Another process for separating these metals, which is somewhat more accurate than the preceding, is as follows: Filter out the precipitated carbonates, and wash the precipitate into a test tube, add a small quantity of HC1: it changes the carbonates to chlorides. Evaporate the solution, cautiously, to dryness, in a small evaporating dish. A crystalline residue remains, which is then treated with (C2H3)HO, ethylic alcohol. The crystals should be pulverized carefully with the end of a stirring rod that the (C2H5)HO may act upon every part: the SrC12 and CaC12 are dissolved, while the BaCl2 remains. (It is well to repeat this process to render the separation complete.) The residue may now be tested for Ba. (See tests for Ba, p. 56.) Add dilute H2S04 to the filtrate. This produces a white, gelatinous precipitate of mixed strontium sulphate, SrS04, and calcium sulphate, CaS04, with a trace of BaS04, which must be removed to make the final tests reliable. Filter out the precipitate, transfer it to an evaporating dish, and boil it for five minutes, in a mixture of sodium carbonate, Na2C0s, and potassium sulphate, K2S04. This turns the SrS04 and CaS04 to carbonates, while the BaS04 remains, but soon dissolves. Filter; the precipitate in the filter consists of mixed SrC03, and CaCOs. Wash it thoroughly with water. Now, transfer the precipitate to a test tube, and dissolve it in HCl; the effervescence is caused by the escape of C02. Evaporate the solution nearly to dryness to expel all HCl, and dissolve it in water. This solution consists of SrCl2 and CaCl2. If the solution is not clear, filter out the impurities. Divide the solution into two parts, and test one for Sr by adding CaS04. A white precipitate of SrS04 shows...
