Since the above was written we have seen Mr. Symons's paper on "Lunar Motion," in " The English Journal of Education" for the 1st of June, 1856, pp. 253--275; hut as it leaves the question of the Moon's rotation in precisely the same position, we have no occasion further to revert to it. Mr. Airy's two letters, embodied in this paper, and in contradiction with each other, would seem to have impressed Mr. Symons with the erroneous idea, very generally entertained, that the question really rests on a mere inaccuracy of expression on the part of Astronomers. (Compare 6 and Note 19.) A paper, also, on " the Moon Controversy," printed for private circulation, has been communicated to us, from which we perceive that its author, Mr. H. Perigal, jun., shares in the opinion of Mr. Evan Hopkins and Mr. Symons; and from the statement of the latter (p. 275) it would appear that they have many scientific 39. To prove what we have just advanced, namely, that the Moon, in the course of each revolution round the Earth, might in succession present every portion of her entire surface to our view, without any rotatory movement on her own axis: let, in Fig. 18, E represent the Earth, M the Moon, abc the opposite hemisphere, s some fixed star.
