Not illustrated. 1872 Excerpt: ...But he found that by a combination of these means, viz., the continuous and alternating electrical currents, simultaneously carried on, a number of momentary disruptious of the elementary metallic constitution took place, during each of which the molecules of resolved metal became subject to such chemical change as rendered them soluble, and caused them to be eliminated through the structural coats of the closed bladders. Moreover, it is commonly the practice to show the patient, who has been taking an ordinary electrical bath, some bright metallic mercury afterwards visible on the pole connected with the side of the bath in which immersion has been pursued. But this is, in reality, the most transparent and sheer charlatanism; for, if any such quantity of poisonous metal as might be thus extracted during a single bath of an hour's duration had been contained within a patient's body beforehand, it must have proved completely subversive of all vital capabilities; whereas a copper pole which has been treated with an amalgam containing mercury, and which has then become oxydized by exposure to common air, will look lustreless and dim until the continuous electrical current passing through it during the bath oxydizes it, and restores its mirror-like mercurial appearance, such as is shown to the patient as bearing mercury extracted from the system by the bath. Likewise, the addition of some soluble salt of mercury, such as the bichloride, has before now been made to the water of the bath, so that an actual lustre might be thus visibly given to the pole whilst the patient took the bath; though it need not be said that meantime mercury was being recklessly introduced into that patient's body through the skin. That it is veritably possible to pass metallic elements ...
