The Age of Enlightenment profoundly enriched religious and philosophical understanding and continues to influence present-day thinking. Works collected here include masterpieces by David Hume, Immanuel Kant, and Jean-Jacques Rousseau, as well as religious sermons and moral debates on the issues of the day, such as the slave trade. A dissertation in the form of a dialogue on the history of public toilets, in which Rolleston coins the word "water closet." Rolleston relates textual evidence from biblical and classical sources to observations of present-day (eighteenth-century) behaviors, combining the literary and the scientific. The philosophical dialogue is a lighthearted but serious debate centered cultural differences and nature vs. nurture in toilet habits through history. The main theme is shame. N. B.
