Cooper This little volume is sent out into the world already over burdened with books - not as an aspirant for literary honors, but simply as the unpretentious record of a plain business man, who came to California in 1850, assisted in driving the first band of sheep across the plains from the Missouri River in 1851, had his full experience as a miner and teamster in the northern portion of our State, and in 1863 settled in the upper part of Santa Barbara County, where he engaged in the business of sheep-raising. At that time there was no American family in the Lompoc Valley, nor, indeed, within a large radius around.
