This law palled without Oppofi tion: and Clodius loft no time in putting it in execution; but fell to work immediately in plundering, burning, and demolifh ing Cicero's houfes both in the city and the country. It can not be denied, that ln this calamity of his exile, he did not be have himfelf with that firmnefs which might reafonably be ex pef'ted from one who had [borne fo glorious a part in the te public confcious of his integrity, and fuflbring in the caufe ofhis country for his letters are generally filled with fach lamentable expreflions of grief and defpair, that his befi friends, and even his wife, were forced to admonifh him fometimes, to roufe his courage, and remember his former character. Atticus was con ftantly putting him in mind of it; and fent him word of a re port that was brought to Rome by one of Craflus's freed men, that his aflliction had difordered his fenfes. He was now in deed attacked in his weakefl part; the only place in which he was vulnerable. To have been as great in affliction as he was in profperity, would have been a perfefiion not given to man: yet this very weaknefs flowed from a fource, which rendered him the more amiable in all the other parts of life; and the fame tendernefs of difpolition, which made him love his friends, his children, his country, more paffionately than other men, made him feel the lofs of them more fenfibly. When he had been gone a little more thantwo months, a motion was made in the fenate by one of the tribunes, who was -his friend, 'to re call him, and repeal the, lawef Clodius, to which the whole houfe readily agreed. Many obltru???tions, as may eafily be ima gined, were given to it by the Clodian faction; but this made the fenate only the more refolute to efl'ecl it. They pafl'eda vote therefore, that no other bufinefs fhould be done, . Till Cicero's te turn was carried; which at lafl it was, 'and in fo fplendid and triumphant a manner, that he had reafon, he fays, to fear, lefl people fhould'imagin'e that he hinfelf had contrived hislate flight, for theifak'e of foigloriousa refloration.
