Excerpt from A New Version of the Book of Job, Vol. 1: With Expository Notes, and an Introduction, on the Spirit, Composition, and Author of the Book With increased violence a mental struggle be tween faith, which asserted the Divine jus tice - and reason, aided by a fertile fancy, which hesitated not to reproach the Almighty with the evils incident to mortality. At length the conflict was ended by a free confession of his limited capacity, and an endeavour to Oh tain the repose with which faith rewards a confiding soul. Excited by conscious freedom, this son of earth, a philosophic Titan, boasts that he Will scale the height where the God head is enthroned in sacred obscurity, and tear from thence the veil which conceals him from mortal gaze. But he is repelled by Om nipotent love, which, instead of crushing him with the mighty thunderbolt, raises in mercy its high and holy voice, which teaches the unfathomable depth of Divine wisdom, and the modest humility befitting a creature so ignorant as man. The consideration Of the Mosaic doctrine, to which the origin of the Book of Job may be traced, will explain why the suffering often endured by the pious, so powerfully affected the mind of the Sage.
