Noah Davis was born into slavery in Madison County, Virginia in 1804. Early on, he learned the shoemaking trade. He joined the Baptist Church in 1831 and soon became a licensed minister. In 1845, he paid his owner $500 for his freedom. By 1851, through fundraising and cobbling, he raised enough money to free his wife and two youngest children. Several years later he freed another daughter. He published "A Narrative of the Life of Rev. Noah Davis, a Colored Man" in 1859 in an attempt to raise money to free his two remaining sons -- as well as to help his struggling church. In this narrative, Reverend Davis describes his life in slavery, his conversion to the Baptist church and his efforts to free his family.
