Excerpt from A Memorial Discourse on the Life and Services of Rev. Henry Philip Tappan, D. D., LL. D., President of the University From 1852 to 1863: Delivered in University Hall, by Request of the Senate and Alumni, at the Meeting of the Association of the Alumni, June 28, 1882 But the death record of the year was not yet closed. One more name was to be added to the mournful list, a name which must for ever stand first among the names illustrious in the history of this University. We have received the announcement of the death of Henry Philip Tappan, first President of the University of Michi gan. Most impressively does this announcement come upon us, after the losses, unprecedented in our history, which we have so recently been called to mourn. Most impressively does it remind us that this institution is rapidly passing beyond its infancy, and that it numbers amongst its friends, its alumni, and its past and present officers of instruction, many who are already advanced in life, and who are liable at any moment to fall by the wayside.
