Occasionally, in man, fatty degeneration of the renal cortex follows diphtheria. In the rabbit and guinea-pig this does not occur, but it occurs, in some cases, in the cat. In the rabbit the diphtheria poison may produce fatty de generation of the liver; in the guinea-pig this does not occur, but one of the characteristic actions of the bacillus in the guinea-pig is the production of double pleural effusion.
