It was an eye opener to read the history and life styles of this particular area of France during the 1900's through the eyes of an astute peasant woman. This book is now making the rounds of our retirement community and rings true and authentic when those of us whose roots come from Europe discuss the similarities with our 2nd and 3rd generation ancestry as to how Joseph Allais and the people of that area lived and reacted to changes in their everyday lives, be it government of France as a whole or war or lifestyle. One paragraph I did not understand pertaining to the four wards she had (page 173). Why did she pay foster care for Catherine and Louisette and board for Marie ? If anyone knows please tell me.
